Head of School Search

Kathryn Lundstrom will end her tenure as head of school at the end of the 2012-2013 school year. Ms. Lundstrom's longtime service as a teacher and her two terms as head of school have helped TDS become the strong, vibrant, and growing school it is today. Building on this solid footing, beginning May 2012, the TDS board of trustees is conducting a search for a new head of school, to be selected no later than January 2013. |

New Head of School Announced
Dear Triangle Day School Community,
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am extremely honored to announce that Mr. Douglas Norry will become TDS’ next Head of School, beginning July 1, 2013. Doug is currently the Head of the Middle School and Special Assistant to the Headmaster at Landon School, a non-sectarian day school for boys Grades 3 -12 in Bethesda, Maryland.
Doug, an exceptional educator, leader and coach, began his education at Landon School. From there, he continued his studies at Amherst College, where he graduated with a double major in Geology (Summa Cum Laude) and Psychology (Phi Beta Kappa). Doug continued to develop his educational leadership skills as he received a Masters in Arts in Education Administration at the prestigious Klingenstein Center for Private School Leadership at the Teachers College, Columbia University. He has extensive leadership training as a National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) E.E. Ford Fellow.
We are fortunate in that Doug comes with diverse experience as an educator, having worked in co-ed environments at the Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School and the Seven Hills School in Cincinnati as well as all-girls and all-boys schools. In addition to teaching, he served as Assistant Director of the Middle School for The Bryn Mawr School, followed by his current position as Head of Middle School at Landon. As a proponent of the teacher/coach model, he has coached several sports, both girls and boys of all ages, throughout his entire career. Doug has that rare ability to foster intellectual curiosity while developing the whole child. A prolific writer, Doug thoughtfully communicates his educational pedagogy with a mixture of humility, thirst for continued growth and appreciation for creative teaching.
We are pleased to welcome back to North Carolina his wife, Carrie, a native of Greensboro, as well as their three children, Will, Emily and Kate, ages 11, 9, and 6, respectively. Carrie is also a graduate of Teachers College at Columbia University and currently a Middle School Math Specialist and teacher in Bethesda.
Doug’s appointment is the result of the extraordinary efforts of many people. I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the entire Search Committee for its tireless efforts and dedication to the process. The search process, modeled after NAIS recommendations, was exemplary in its attention to detail, thoroughness, consistency and objectivity. Thank you to Dockery Durham, Dan Forringer, Cindy Lucas, Bela Kussin, Vaishali Mankad, Chris Moore, Lloyd Patillo, Sue Wasiolek, and most especially to John Board, Vice Chair, and John Hardin, Chair, for their dedication and guidance throughout this process. Their tireless efforts demonstrate their meaningful connection and continued support of our wonderful little school. I would also like to thank our Board of Trustees, the faculty, staff, parents, and students who met, toured and interviewed our three finalist candidates. I am confident that this detailed and inclusive process yielded the best match for Triangle Day School from an excellent pool of candidates.
I will conclude by quoting Doug from his educational philosophy statement, “Successful school heads know all of their constituencies, understand the School’s mission, communicate effectively, model integrity, possess a deep passion for their jobs and schools, and inspire both adults and children.” I am confident that TDS has found that Head. Please join me in welcoming Doug, Carrie, Will, Emily and Kate to the TDS family.
Sincerely,
Joanne Dellaero, Chair

Dear Members of the Triangle Day School Community,
It is with great excitement and much anticipation that I accept the offer to become the next Head of Triangle Day School.
During my two-day visit last month, I ventured into nearly every classroom. In each instance, I observed talented, creative teachers and respectful, curious students, striving to do their best. Having also met with various constituencies, including Board members, parents, faculty and staff, as well as students, I was struck by the warmth of the community, the strength of the relationships, and the commitment to and love for TDS.
I am grateful to John Hardin, John Board, and Joanne Dellaero for leading a thorough, organized search process with a high degree of professionalism coupled with true Southern hospitality. In addition, Triangle Day School has certainly benefitted from Kathryn Lundstrom’s second stint as Head, and I want to thank her for her guidance during my visit.
My wife, Carrie, along with our three children, Will, Emily, and Kate, are excited to join such a cohesive community. I look forward to visiting the campus in the coming months and beginning to work with the Board and the faculty to discuss the School’s unique strengths and identify ways for TDS to live its mission even more fully in the years ahead.
Best,
Doug Norry
